Fire Department

Ours is a volunteer fire department, and here is how it works: if you are on the island and there is a fire, you are a volunteer. For some that means manning hoses, for others it means making the coffee that will inevitably be desired. While unintentional or out of control fires are few and very far between, any reported instance usually brings all hands on deck. The fire department has a tank and pump trucks, which can be supplemented by equipment from the Park. Official volunteers have turnout gear.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT): Among the year-round residents is a fully trained, fully equipped, and highly experienced emergency medical technician. Back-up EMT services and helicopter evacuation are available through Knox County: 911 links with the mainland dispatch.
